Healthy soil works wonders for plants. When well-taken care of, it boosts and strengthens the growth of plants — a key to higher yield for farmers. To achieve this, we need to ensure an adequate amount of nutrients for the soil.

One important nutrient is calcium, which is responsible for promoting cell division and growth and strengthening the cell walls. However, if the soil is affected by calcium deficiency, it’s more susceptible to disease thus directly affecting fruit quality. Supplying calcium fertilizer on your plants as a crop nutrition product can prevent this from happening.

What Is Calcium Fertilizer?

Calcium fertilizers make diseases like leaf edge necrosis easy to control. These are mostly composed of calcium nitrate, a water-soluble fertilizer usually applied as a dissolved solution. If your soil assessment shows lack of calcium, using this can improve soil quality, especially on building cell structure and neutralizing acids to detoxify the plant.

When to Use Calcium Fertilizers?

Some factors to consider in using calcium fertilizers are 1) type of soil, and 2) source of water. While most soils have enough access to calcium for plants, there are some types that need more nourishment like tropical acid soils. These soils tend to have a low calcium content, and need support by using calcium nitrate. On the other hand, the presence of water is a good indicator of calcium in plants. It’s best to check irrigation if your plants receive too much or too little water — it signifies the need for nutrient backup.

Heat and moisture can also indicate calcium deficiency in some plants, and a calcium fertilizer can help promote cell growth and produce more healthy leaves.
